  • Overview



    Ensures that the area is operated in a safe and cost effective manner while adhering to established safety, environmental, quality, maintenance, production, and fiscal policies and procedures.   Leads the maintenance efforts for the area and monitors the area operations, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), completes the appropriate reports, notes any deviations and/or abnormalities and takes corrective action as necessary. Makes recommendations to improve the performance of the area and site as appropriate. Support operational excellence process improvement teams through active involvement and engagement.


    • Ensures compliance with all State and Federal Laws and Regulations while promoting safety and adhering to all MSHA requirements.
    • Ensures that employees and visitors understand and follow the appropriate safety and regulatory procedures. Additionally, ensures safety reports on any accident or near miss are completed and any required corrective actions necessary are taken. Keeps department clean and free of debris and hazards.
    • Sets standards and procedures to maintain and maximize effectiveness of maintenance services to ensure that equipment and the infrastructure are in a condition to meet safety, environmental, quality, production and cost objectives.
    • Ensures a proper preventative/predictive maintenance program (with adequate spare parts) is prepared and implemented to optimize equipment efficiency, reliability and availability while minimizing downtime and operating costs.
    • Ensures work procedures and instructions are communicated, understood and thoroughly applied by all supervisors and employees to maximize productivity and work quality.
    • Ensures that regular and shutdown maintenance work is planned and scheduled with the required resources allocated in order to achieve high quality work in a timely manner.
    • Analyzes equipment and/or system failures to determine root cause and then lead the efforts to develop solutions and actions to reduce or prevent reoccurrence of the failure.
    • Reviews mechanical and electrical emergencies and ensures required resources are allocated and repairs are performed in a timely manner to minimize production disruption.
    • Meets controllable maintenance cost objectives and implements corrective action if required to reduce cost variances.
    • Analyses needs for training, evaluates personnel, and corrects sub-standard performance.
    • Prepare annual maintenance budget requirements and capital plan.
    • Motivates supervisors to maintain productivity and quality at expected levels.
    • Provides technical and trouble shooting support to maintenance staff as required.
    • Routinely attends the daily schedule review meeting, weekly scheduling meeting and the area’s reliability meeting.
    • Ensures that regular reviews of the Maintenance Management System are conducted and that corrective measures, if required, are taken.
    • Manages departmental Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and provides regular progress reports to site management.
    • Ensures that proper equipment maintenance records are maintained within the EAM/CMMS system.
    • Provides back-up coverage and other duties as required to meet business demands.



    Bachelor of Science degree with emphasis in engineering or 5 plus years of maintenance management experience with a total of 10 years experience, preferably in the production of minerals or chemicals that require processing with high heat.  A demonstrated ability to lead both salary and hourly employees and achieve results through others.  Management and technical skills should include an ability to think ahead and plan over a specific time span with prepared action plans to achieve results, motivating, developing, mentoring, and when necessary, disciplining employees.  An ability to balance and achieve positive results in the areas of safety, environmental, quality, productivity, cost efficiency and employee relations in a unionized environment. A team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
